Why I Love Agency Life

When I jumped into the world of professional creativity, I was a fresh-faced, 22-year-old recent grad. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, let alone getting into. Call it luck, but choosing to land at an agency was the best decision of my life.

In the vast landscape of professions, few offer the ever-evolving playground that is the marketing industry. Sure, we have our fair share of clichés: cool office spaces, crazy deadlines, sticky-note throwdowns, and ultra-hip people (clearly, in my case, there are exceptions). But agency life is so much more. It's a universe where creativity is encouraged and every day presents a new challenge.

As my experience grew, so did my passion for this work. Here are the top five things I love most about this business.

1. The More You Know

In the creative industry you'll become the jack of all trades. Just when you think you've mastered a particular skill or platform, a new technology emerges or a trend sweeps the market. No matter the industry, it is a perpetual cycle of learning and adaptation, where staying ahead means embracing constant change. You’re always learning.

One benefit to being at a niche agency is having the experience and built-in knowledge of a specific industry. However, every client comes to us with unique challenges and varying audience needs. The best creative solutions are inspired by knowing everything you possibly can about the subject you are marketing. Whether immersing yourself in the world of upcycled fruit, learning the ins and outs of bee pollination or understanding the sales cycle of fishing licenses, you are constantly gaining knowledge. Not to mention becoming a valuable trivia teammate. If you’re a lifelong learner, this is the place for you.

2. Oh, The Places You’ll Go

One of the most exhilarating aspects of working in an agency is the element of unpredictability. Every project is a new adventure waiting to unfold—whether it’s a photoshoot on a beach in Ireland, a road trip through rural Idaho or a spontaneous brainstorming session at a local dive bar. This not only keeps the job exciting but also fosters a spirit of exploration. You get to collaborate with talented artists and production teams while immersing yourself in diverse cultures and landscapes. Each experience adds depth to both professional and personal growth. Thanks to agency life, I’ve collected some pretty funny stories over the years.

3. Hold On To Your Hat

If there’s one thing you’ll never experience in the agency world, it’s stagnation. The pace is relentless, the energy palpable and the stakes high. It’s an environment where creativity thrives under pressure and deadlines loom large. From juggling multiple projects simultaneously to navigating shifting trends, each week is a whirlwind of activity. And yet, amidst the chaos, there’s a rush of exhilaration. For someone like me, who thrives in this fast-paced environment, I can’t imagine it any other way. Plus, when you work at an independent agency, the layers of bureaucracy are minimal, creating immense opportunities for accelerated career growth.

4. I Mentioned Cool People…

In an agency, you're not just working with colleagues, you're working with some of the most interesting and eclectic personalities around. Visionary creatives, savvy strategists, data wizards, eccentric artists, trendsetters…the diversity of talent is necessary for unlocking the best possible work. And if you like to laugh, I can promise you will laugh with your agency friends every single day.

But, perhaps even more valuable, is the opportunity to learn about the human condition. Not just as consumers but as individuals with unique experiences and backgrounds. It's a window into what makes people tick and a chance to broaden your own perspective.

5. An Intersection of Culture and Creativity

In what other profession do you get paid to be a student of culture? In a marketing agency, understanding the intricacies of society isn't just a job requirement, it's key to creating breakthrough work. Dissecting the latest trends in sustainable packaging, exploring Reddit threads on pet care, secret shopping at Whole Foods…every campaign is an opportunity to capture the essence of the moment and make something stand out.

But it's not just about following trends; it's about using the power of storytelling to inspire change, challenge conventions and leave a lasting impact on society. Sounds a bit lofty? It’s not. I’ve been lucky enough to see it myself.

The agency world is simply a way of life. It's a journey of perpetual learning, creative exploration and meaningful connections. It's about embracing the unknown and shaping the future. And for those of us fortunate enough to call it our profession, there's no greater thrill than being part of it.
